Nepal Hackathon: Mobilizing Public Health Innovation, Technology and Long-Term Support for Disaster Response

The Public Health Innovation Lab is supporting the Nepal Hackathon as part of a broader effort to connect public health expertise, technology, data and private-sector capacity with Nepal-led disaster response, recovery and long-term resilience.

The Public Health Innovation Lab (PHiL) works to close the gap between public health and technology by bringing together public-health leaders, technologists, data scientists, researchers, policymakers, communities and the private sector to apply existing and emerging technologies to major global health challenges. The current disaster in Nepal presents an urgent example of why that work matters. Effective disaster response increasingly depends on the ability to combine local knowledge with health data, geospatial intelligence, communications infrastructure, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, logistics systems and other technologies—yet the institutions with the greatest need do not always have immediate access to the people, tools or resources that could help. The Nepal Hackathon is an effort to strengthen those connections while putting Nepalese institutions, responders and communities at the center of deciding what support is useful.

From an emergency hackathon to sustained public health collaboration

The Nepal Hackathon will bring together Nepal-based responders, scientists, public-health professionals, engineers, technologists, universities and community organizations with a wider network of global experts and private-sector partners. Teams may include software engineers, AI and data specialists, disaster-response experts, epidemiologists, environmental scientists, geospatial researchers, drone operators, communications specialists and public-health researchers. Their work could range from improving disaster monitoring and early-warning systems to analyzing health and humanitarian data, identifying gaps in aid delivery, improving information available to responders, strengthening communications and logistics, and developing tools that support longer-term disaster preparedness and climate resilience.

For PHiL, however, the objective is larger than producing prototypes during a single weekend. One of the persistent challenges in global health technology is not the absence of potentially useful tools; it is the absence of sustained systems that connect technological capacity with public-health needs. Disasters often produce a temporary surge of technical assistance, research interest, funding and volunteer capacity, followed by a rapid decline in attention. PHiL is interested in helping build a different model: one in which the relationships created during the emergency can become a durable network through which Nepalese organizations continue to access technical expertise, research partnerships, technology companies, universities, funders and other resources during recovery and beyond.

The Nepal Hackathon will support public health response in Nepal by connecting local institutions and responders with global expertise in health data, environmental health, emergency preparedness, technology and long-term recovery.

Public health needs extend far beyond the immediate disaster response

The immediate humanitarian response is only the first phase of the public-health challenge. Major disasters can disrupt health facilities, safe water and sanitation, medication access, transportation, communications and supply chains while displacing communities and increasing risks to physical and mental health. As the emergency phase subsides, different questions become increasingly important: Which populations or geographic areas were underserved? Where have health services not recovered? What environmental or infrastructure risks remain? What data were missing during the response? Which technologies proved useful? What systems should be institutionalized before the next emergency?

The public-health work emerging from the Nepal Hackathon can therefore operate across three connected time horizons: immediate disaster response, recovery and long-term resilience. Immediate projects can help responders understand needs and coordinate resources. Recovery work can examine gaps in health services, environmental health, water and sanitation, displacement, continuity of care and other longer-term effects. Resilience projects can focus on disaster preparedness, climate and environmental monitoring, early-warning systems, health data infrastructure, geospatial analysis, digital public infrastructure and the responsible application of artificial intelligence to public-health decision-making. The goal is not technology for its own sake, but technology that strengthens the capacity of public institutions and communities to protect health.

Nepal-led problems, global technical capacity

A fundamental principle of the initiative is that the people closest to a problem are often best positioned to define it. Nepal has substantial expertise across disaster management, engineering, medicine, public health, hydrology, climate science, community response and technology. International participation should supplement that capacity rather than displace it. A Nepalese disaster-response organization might identify an information problem that can be addressed with support from data engineers. A public-health institution could work with university researchers to analyze gaps in services or longer-term health consequences. Scientists and drone operators might combine field observations with satellite imagery and remote sensing. Technology companies could provide engineering expertise, cloud infrastructure, AI tools, communications technology or datasets that would otherwise be difficult for local teams to access.

This approach also changes the central question of a hackathon. Rather than beginning with “What can we build?”, teams begin with “What problem needs to be solved, who is already working on it, and what additional capability would make their work more effective?” In some cases the answer may be software. In others it may be a new dataset, an analysis, a shared protocol, a monitoring system, a research collaboration, access to infrastructure or a pathway to funding. Serious public health innovation requires all of these possibilities to remain open.

People, universities, companies and funders looking forhow to help in Nepal can contribute technical expertise, data, technology, funding and other resources to Nepal-led response and recovery efforts.

Building infrastructure for the next crisis, not only responding to this one

Nepal is also confronting a challenge that extends well beyond a single disaster. Climate change, extreme weather, glacial hazards, landslides, flooding, difficult mountain terrain and geographically isolated communities create complex and evolving risks. Building resilience will require continued investment in disaster preparedness, climate resilience, early-warning systems, environmental monitoring, health-system resilience, emergency communications and public-health data infrastructure. Many of the technologies relevant to those challenges already exist. The larger task is integrating them into institutions and operating systems in ways that are affordable, sustainable and appropriate for the communities that use them.

The Nepal Hackathon provides an opportunity to demonstrate what sustained public-private collaboration in global health can look like. PHiL hopes to help connect promising teams with technical mentorship, researchers, universities, companies and other partners after the event; identify projects that merit continued development or funding; document lessons that can inform future disaster-response efforts; and strengthen a network capable of supporting Nepalese partners over the months and years ahead.

The measure of success, therefore, will not be the number of projects produced during one weekend. It will be whether the collaboration creates useful tools, better information, stronger institutions and relationships that remain available after international attention has moved elsewhere. Closing the public health–technology gap requires more than innovation. It requires sustained coordination—and the Nepal Hackathon is an opportunity to put that principle into practice.
